The End of a Road

The End of a Road

Today, March 4, 2006, may very well be Jazzy's last day with us, at least in body - never in spirit.

Jasmine Rose Crowell has the distinction of being one of the "Greatest Dogs on Earth."

But time marches on, and takes its toll on a body, and it has taken its toll on hers. It's gotten to the point where Paul has to lift her up and carry her outside, and then she still falls down trying to do her business. It's been like this for a while, but this week she has taken a turn for the worse and can't traverse the floor any longer on her own power. It's no fun for her, it's no fun for us, and Whitby is running around trying to figure out why Jazzy has been getting ALL the loves lately (not really, but she thinks like that!)

It needn't be said, but I'll say it anyway.

WE LOVE OUR JASMINE ROSE SO VERY MUCH.

The pictures here were taken this morning. I fear by tomorrow we will be a one dog family - we haven't been a one dog family since just before Whitby came to live with us back in 1999.

That's all for now. Paul has gone down to see the vet to ask if Dog-Doctor can come by and end the misery Jazzy's been living thru these last few months. If he can't, Paul may have to drive her to Andover to the emergency vet, which is an hour's drive away, and that will be even harder. We have always been lucky in that our vet has come out to the house to ease our little loved ones into their next life/spirit phase at home, and not in some sterile doctor's office. He's good like that.

I'll be back later to fill you in on how things went. Until then, it's just a very dark and sad place here today at Crow Cottage.

ADDENDUM:

Six hours later.

She's gone.

Gone from our sight, but never from our hearts or minds.

Jasmine Rose was a trooper to the end. Never one single complaint. In fact, in the entire 11 years that she lived with us (she turned 14 last month), she never complained about anything at all. She truly was the best of the best...the BEST in SHOW, as it were. That's not to say Whitby isn't tops, because she now is our top dog, even if she is the only dog around here. Jazzy hardly ever said a word, but it sure is quiet without her here in our midst. I hope Whitby can adjust OK. I want us to be a one-dog family for a while now and see if we can bond with Whitby a little more...take more walkies together. It's been a while since we've taken walkies due to Jazzy's condition.

It sure is quiet in here...

In the end, we had to take her to a vet who is in Marblehead, not our regular vet. Our regular dog-doctor has taken on new office hours - Monday thru Friday only, but it seems that all pet-related emergencies happen on the weekends. The other vet was open and accommodated us today. They gave us space to sit with Jazz for a while and say our goodbyes. Paul and I lost it several times. I had to drive to work afterwards and the whole way was thru heavy tears, but Jazzy went very quietly and peacefully on to her next great adventure.

I'm hoping she met up with the Other Greatest Dog in the Whole World - Muffin Collie-Flower - who passed in 1999. I hope they are playing together in dog-heaven right this minute, and not fretting over us poor saddened humans left back on earth.

All I have here is a glass of ice water, but I raise my glass and toast to you
