Coming Soon - New Dog on the Block

COMING SOON - NEW DOG ON THE BLOCK!

Time waits for no man, or dog...

We have mourned the loss of our dear lassie, Jasmine, now for five days. Whitby has been on the sad side, too. Looking around the house for signs of her sister (who she really thought of as her mother, I believe).

At first I thought that maybe I only wanted to stay with one dog in the family. But watching Whitby these past few days, I know that is not going to happen. We need another dog, she needs a sister, and that's how it is.

We found one. We waste no time in the dog department here.

Take a gander at these sweet little collie eyes.

The reason we found our new dog so fast is that I had e-mailed Dennis and Mary Caldwell who own Spruce Meadow Collies in Tennessee. That is where our Jasmine Rose lived before coming here to Crow Cottage 11 years ago. So Paul suggested I ask Dennis if he had any available smooth (short fur) collies available and turns out he did! Also, since we aren't in a position that we could make the long trip from Mass. to Tennessee to pick her up, we asked if they might possibly be coming up to the dog show at the Big E which is held in Springfield, MA, each year. Turns out they are!

Dennis has two dogs available, a boy (Nova) and a girl (Femalee). Nova is a very handsome dude, for sure, but we've been girl-dog people for a while now and really wanted to go with another girl...

To tell the truth, we'd never even considered a "blue merle" collie before either. The colorings and markings on blue merles are sometimes quite wild looking and we'd always shyed away from them. But you know what? If all goes well, we will be the proud parents of a cute little 2 year old blue merle female smooth collie in less than 2 months!

Her name stymied us. "Femalee"?
Was that "Female" spelled wrong? How is it pronounced? I figured it was pronounced "Fem'-A-Lee" so I thought that if we really couldn't get used to it, we might just give her a name that sounds very much like that one...so she wouldn't feel funny with a new name and all... like, for instance, "Emily". Paul agreed that would be a nice name, but this is not set in stone yet...

Dennis is at this moment taking Femalee to be in a dog show and is also showing her at the end of this month. We don't do shows, although we have been known to attend a few of them...collie shows specifically. We're not interested in earning blue ribbons or prize money or any money with our dogs - we just want to wallow in the love-fest that happens when you live with a special dogger - or two!

So, things are going along nicely in that regard. Whitby is lonely, but since I work at home, I am able to keep her company most of the day. Today, Paul and I had some free time together so we piled Whitby and the two of us into the car and drove over to the beach. It was low tide, perfect for walking, and quite chilly really, but my little darling Whitby had the time of her life, running in the wind, skirting the waves that rolled in, smelling all the sea-smells on the beach. She barked and barked, too. She yelped with delight, and jumped up on Paul for hugs, and she greeted other beach-walking dogs with open arms...sniffing all over and just saying "Hi". She hasn't done much of this lately since, for a long while, Jazzy has been lame, and we never wanted to just take one dog to have fun and not the other.

With Femalee (or Emily) here, though, we plan to do a LOT more beach-walking! There are many beaches around here, too. Not all of them allow dogs. In fact, Devereaux Beach, where we went today, doesn't allow dogs, but since there were several dogs already walking down the beach, we did it too. In the warmer weather we'll need to find other beach-walking accommodations. People are so uptight lately about dogs fouling public places. Hey, we bring poop bags and never leave our mess behind for anyone to step in!

I degress...

Just wanted to share this little bit of good news from here. Life doesn't stand still, and we are soon off on another adventure with dogs. It's what life is all about here at Crow Cottage!

Cheers,

Bex
