On The Road to Good Health?

On The Road to Good Health?

I don't know if I'm officially on the road to any sort of good health or not. I did have my physical the other day, and lived to tell the tale. I don't know any more now about my condition than I did before I went! I guess that's the nature of the "family doctor" beast... they just poke you, listen to your innerds, and nod or shake their heads, and then when it's all done, they scribble on a bunch of forms, and send you off to specialists to determine what's really wrong in all the various parts of your body.

The only thing I heard my doc say that was encouraging was that my "heart is good." I figured it wouldn't be, just as I figured all the other body parts wouldn't be, as well. I told her that was all due to the dogs... she had a quizzical look on her face and asked "Dogs?"

I said yes, dogs are good for the heart...

Anyway, since it's been a decade or more since I'd seen a physician prior to last Friday, I am now enrolled into the "system" here. I now have "appointments" to make, appointments to keep, and things to worry over that I previously didn't worry over.

They took my blood pressure with a new fangled contraption that has been invented since the last time I had it done, and it hurt like hell! Nearly squeezed my arm right to mush! And I forgot to even ASK what my BP was, so I still don't know!

I did have to step up on the scale for the NP and, bless her, she said to remove my shoes first, but I did have all my other clothing on, which is not how I like to weigh myself at home. Oh no. Buck nekkid is the only way to weigh! And I did get a glimpse of that number but no, I am not inclined to share. Suffice it to say, it is an incentive to eat more healthily (?) from now on.

Then into the exam room. My new doc is a peach. I mean, I really like her. I found her because she does a local cable television show on health matters, and she also is a volunteer host for our local PBS TV station in Boston, and I see her during the fund-raising segments trying to get us to send in money. I like her a lot. Turns out, she lived in England for three years once, and she loved it to pieces. She said she'd move there "in a heartbeat" if only she were licensed to practice there. That's my kind of lady!

The office isn't in a medical building, either. It's in a nice suburban neighborhood one town away from here, in a huge old Victorian house, painted mint green with cream trim. Very ornate and lovely, in a quiet little neighborhood only a block away from the ocean. It is serene in her office, too, air-conditioned, and there was new-age type music playing all the time. I was not nervous at all, and surprised myself at that. Normally I'm a wreck.

As in all old Victorian homes, the rooms have high old ceilings, fireplaces galore, and there were antiques scattered throughout the rooms. The exam room was big, with a huge gorgeous old wooden desk, some antique dressers, and a beautiful fireplace and mantle with lovely framed pictures sitting here and there all around. There was that gawd-awful exam table you have to jump up on, with the obligatory little robe that hardly closes in the back (especially if you are a plus size, like me). But it was really lovely, other than that.

I had my exam, she poked in all the available openings I had, and then I left. But I am not done yet. Oh no.... it's just begun, really.

I have to get lab work, an ophthalmologic exam (eyes), an orthopedic exam (my bad leg which she said may probably be a bad case of arthritis), a mammogram, a bone density scan, and last but not least, a colonoscopy. And I have an appointment to see her again the first of September, so August should be a really fun month for me... (not!).

I survived the initial shock of it all, and am just going on from here. When I know anything more, I'll be sure to let you all know.

Meanwhile, I put the dogs out in their yard a little while ago to do their business, and they are barking to me - it's darn hot out there and they want in!

Catch you later.

Cheers,
Bex
