Letter to the Editor

Letter to the Editor

We subscribe to many magazines from Britain, and our very first one was IN BRITAIN magazine which we have been receiving for 20 years now. It's a wonderful tourist-oriented magazine and we love it. About a month or two ago, I emailed the editors of this magazine to let them know how much I love their magazine, and they ended up publishing my letter, and lo and behold, my letter was their pick for "Favourite Letter" - which meant I had "won a prize" for being selected - they sent me a beautiful book called The English Village by Leigh Driver

It contains "86 idyllic villages and over 200 photographs."

Here is a scanned picture of the page with my letter on it. I know you can't read it here, but I'll type out what it says below.

"As my husband and I enter our 20th year of married life together, we must reflect on the contribution that IN BRITAIN has made to our overall happiness.

Back in 1985, when we first began dating as middle-aged Americans, we discovered a mutual love - England - or rather the thought of visiting England some day.

When we decided to wed the following spring and began planning our dream honeymoon - which was to be three weeks travelling around England and Scotland - we took out a subscription to IN BRITAIN magazine at the recommendation of our travel agent.

We were immediately transported "across the pond" each and every month, and the anticipation of our first upcoming trip to the UK was made all the more wonderful and exciting. For the next nine months, we lingered in the pages of the stories you told along with the fabulous photography.

When May of 1986 rolled around, and we tied the knot, off we flew to London - a whole new world to these New Englanders. We had no firm accommodation planned - only a hire car to be collected - and the experience of finding our way out of the Heathrow car park and onto the motorway was almost more than we could handle. The jet lag from flying all night and driving west from London to Newbury, our first stop, almost did us in, but we found the most delightful Bed and Breakfast there and, for three glorious weeks following that, we drove around England and Scotland, staying here and there in B&Bs and loving every square inch of that magnificent land.

We have continued to receive IN BRITAIN these past 20 years, and have been back to the UK, since our honeymoon, for seven more visits. We have found we love Yorkshire the best of all. We even named our collie dog Whitby in honour of our favourite town on earth. Our mutual love for James Herriot (aka Alf Wight) author of All Creatures Great and Small finally resulted in our meeting the famous vet and having him sign our books for us, right in front of our rented holiday cottage in Sutton-under-Whitestonecliffe in Yorkshire. That was in 1989 - on our second trip to England. Since that time we have been there and back many times and have made some dear friends.

It all began with IN BRITAIN for us, and we hope to continue receiving this wonderful magazine for the rest of our days. We are planning another trip next year (our 9th!) and can't wait to finally be on British soil once again after what will have been a four-year hiatus.

Thank you to all who contribute to this perfectly lovely magazine.

Rebecca and Paul Crowell, Salem, Massachusetts, USA"

The "Letters to the Editor" section takes up two pages, and the picture they printed beside our letter (only part of which is showing in the above photo) is of the harbour in the town of Whitby on the northeast coast of England in Yorkshire, and has this caption The fishing town of Whitby in Yorkshire, Rebecca and Paul Crowell's "favourite town on earth": see Favourite Letter

I highly recommend IN BRITAIN magazine to anyone who either wants to travel there or who can't travel there but wants to experience it anyway.

Cheers,

Bex
